Running a restaurant in Calgary

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so restaurant sales in Calgary carry only the 5% federal GST. Alberta’s tourism levy applies to accommodation, not restaurant bills.

  • Stampede and event surges

Some weeks bring far more covers than usual. Advanced Reservations, coming soon, adds special-day schedules and pacing per 15-minute slot so the kitchen isn’t buried. Today you can use the Kitchen Display System to track every ticket from New to Served with a timer on each.

  • Downtown lunch and after-work crowds

Office lunch along Stephen Avenue and the after-work rush call for different menus. Keep a lunch menu and a Happy Hour menu in the back office, and auto-apply a Happy Hour discount to dine-in only.

  • SkipTheDishes and the other apps

SkipTheDishes is a Prairie company, started in Saskatoon and based in Winnipeg, and Calgary restaurants can list on it as well as Uber Eats and DoorDash. All three arrive in Platter to accept or cancel through your own Deliverect account.

  • Short patio season

Patios in Kensington, Inglewood and on 17th Avenue are busy in summer. Build a Patio room in the floor plan when it opens and stop using it when the weather turns, without changing the rest of your set-up.

With only GST to charge, tax is simpler in Calgary than in most provinces. The harder part is labour and volume. Staff clock in and out with a PIN, shift times feed the labour report and timesheets in the back office, and each server sees their own sales and tips.

Revenue by hour of day in the back office dashboard shows when your rushes actually happen, which helps with staffing decisions. Sales by item, category and server, plus any date range with CSV export, give you the numbers for the week after a big event, and help you plan prep for the next one.

Platter runs on iPad, iPhone and Android, with tableside ordering on iPhone for patios and large rooms. Card payments go through Moneris, and terminals pair over Wi-Fi. Onboarding is remote, with a specialist who sets up menus, the floor plan, printers and staff roles with you.
