An Ottawa restaurant POS for weekday lunches, patios and festival weekends

Ottawa’s restaurant trade follows the weekday rhythm of a government town, then shifts to tourists, festivals and weekend brunch. Platter keeps tables, takeout, delivery and the kitchen in one system on iPad, iPhone or Android, with a back office you can open in any browser.

Running a restaurant in Ottawa

Ottawa restaurants charge 13% Ontario HST (5% federal plus 8% provincial), with a point-of-sale rebate of the provincial part on qualifying prepared food and drinks totalling $4 or less. Across the river, Gatineau is in Quebec, which has its own sales tax and sales-recording rules that this page doesn’t cover.

  • Weekday lunch downtown

Lunch near Parliament Hill and in the downtown core comes in a tight window on weekdays. Takeout and phone orders sit in one list with each guest’s name and number, and the KDS times every ticket so the pass knows what’s late.

  • ByWard Market and festival weekends

The ByWard Market draws visitors year-round, and events such as Winterlude in February bring crowds in the coldest month. Advanced Reservations, coming soon, adds special-day schedules so you can change hours and pacing for those dates.

  • Neighbourhood brunch and patios

The Glebe, Westboro, Hintonburg and Preston Street have strong brunch and patio trade in summer. Build separate Dining Room and Patio rooms in the floor plan, and keep a dedicated Brunch menu in the back office.

A lot of Ottawa restaurants see two different businesses in one week: quick weekday lunches for people working nearby, then slower, larger weekend tables. Platter’s reports show revenue by hour of day and sales by dine-in, takeout and delivery, so you can see how the two compare and staff each one properly.

For full-service rooms, hosts take bookings on the iPad or a phone, assign tables from the floor plan and text guests a confirmation, and today’s reservations show on the floor plan. Online booking from your website, reminders and a large-party request flow come with Advanced Reservations, coming soon.

Uber Eats, DoorDash and SkipTheDishes orders reach Platter through your own Deliverect account. Card payments run through Moneris, with receipts printed or sent by SMS or email. A remote onboarding specialist gets your menus, floor plan, printers and staff roles ready before launch.
