Running a restaurant in Edmonton

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so Edmonton restaurants charge only the 5% federal GST on food and drinks. Alberta’s tourism levy is on accommodation, not restaurant sales.

  • Game nights in the Ice District

Restaurants near Rogers Place get a rush before puck drop and another after the game. Advanced Reservations, coming soon, adds pacing per 15-minute slot to spread out arrivals, and the KDS shows every ticket’s status and timer so the kitchen can see the wave coming.

  • Late nights on Whyte Avenue

Old Strathcona runs late. Dark mode suits dim rooms and late shifts, servers can take orders tableside on iPhone, and bar tabs can be split by seat or by item when a group heads home.

  • Festival summers and short patio season

Edmonton’s summer festivals, including the Fringe in August, bring visitors to Old Strathcona and downtown. Add holiday hours and special days in reservations, and open a Patio room in the floor plan for the warm months.

  • SkipTheDishes and other apps

SkipTheDishes grew out of the Prairies, starting in Saskatoon before settling in Winnipeg, and Edmonton restaurants can list on it as well as Uber Eats and DoorDash. All three arrive in Platter to accept or cancel through your own Deliverect account.

Edmonton’s long winters put weight on takeout and delivery for part of the year, and on patios and events for the rest. Platter’s reports show sales by dine-in, takeout and delivery for any date range, so you can compare January with July and plan staff and inventory around it.

Along 124 Street and in other neighbourhood dining areas, many restaurants keep a small team that covers every role. Staff log in with a PIN, clock in and out, and each role (Manager, Server, Host) has its own permissions. Shift hours feed the labour report in the back office.

Inventory on the Pro plan uses reorder points to flag low stock and replaces spreadsheet counts with day-end counts in the app. Card payments run through Moneris, and a remote onboarding specialist sets up your menus, floor plan, printers and staff roles before you launch. Your account stays in set-up mode until you choose to go live.
