What is an effective processing rate?

It’s everything you paid your processor in a month divided by your card sales for that month. It blends interchange, network fees, the processor’s markup and any monthly fees into one percentage, which makes different providers easy to compare.

Why do restaurants pay different rates?

Rates depend on your card mix (debit, credit, premium and business cards), how cards are taken (tap and chip cost less than keyed-in), your monthly volume and the pricing model your processor uses, such as flat rate or interchange-plus.
