What is Credit card surcharge?

An extra fee added to a bill when a guest pays by credit card.

Credit card surcharge, explained

Merchants outside Quebec can surcharge credit card payments, within card network rules: no more than 2.4% or the merchant’s actual cost of acceptance, whichever is lower. Debit and prepaid cards can’t be surcharged, and guests must be told before they pay.

Why it matters for your restaurant

A surcharge recovers card costs but can annoy guests; lower card costs are an alternative.
