What is Interchange?
The fee a card-issuing bank receives on each card payment, set by the card network.
Interchange, explained
When a guest pays by credit card, the bank that issued the card receives an interchange fee. Visa and Mastercard publish interchange rates by card type and merchant category, so a basic consumer card costs less to accept than a premium rewards card or a business card.
Why it matters for your restaurant
Interchange is usually the largest part of what a restaurant pays to accept cards, and it varies with the cards your guests carry.
